Student Supervisor Certificate
UW Madison and the Office of Student Financial Aid-Student Employment are seeking UW Madison staff with a broad range of experiences in student supervision for a new Student Supervisor Certificate. This program aims to bring together a cohort of up to 36 pro-staff with a variety of perspectives to foster rich discussions and enhanced collaborative learning, strengthening the overall impact of the program.

Student Employment as a High Impact Practice: 3 Hours
In this course, you’ll explore the potential of student employment as a high-impact practice, discuss key stages of student development, and define your own supervisor philosophy. You’ll also have the opportunity to connect with fellow participants and build a collaborative network.

Performance Expectations, Feedback & Improvement: 3 Hours
Maya Angelou said that “feedback is a gift, but it’s up to you to unwrap it.” This course explores how to make student evaluations and performance improvement plans gifts worth giving and receiving.
- Effectively evaluate a student employee’s behavior and performance
- Identify key components to include when conducting performance improvement plans.
- Practice techniques to support well-being while navigating difficult conversations

In this course, we will consider how to ensure your work environment is student-ready and explore ways to holistically support student employees’ well-being.
- Explore the 8 dimensions of well-being
- Understand the current generation of students and consider the current data trends for what students want most in a workplace
- Create an action plan to make your unit student employment ready

This course highlights best practices in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding student employees. A holistic approach to student recruiting and onboarding aids in seamlessly integrating student employees into your team.

Technology as a Tool: 2 Hours
Canvas, Workday, Teams, Outlook, AI… and the list goes on and on! This course explores the wide variety of digital tools available to best support student employees and encourages supervisors to consider ways to utilize technology to increase efficiencies in the work.
- Discuss the impact of AI in student hiring and supervision
- Share resources available for further in-depth digital tool training
